39 Infrastructure, capital and technology are necessary foundations of resilience, but they are not sufficient on their own. Resilient energy systems also require a fundamental redesign, trusted partnerships, effective policy frameworks and public confidence in the decisions being made. Participants emphasized that resilience should be designed into energy systems from the outset. Greenfield projects provide an opportunity to embed redundancy, flexibility and security by design. Participants highlighted that standardization for instance can also accelerate deployment and recovery. 5.1 EMBED RESILIENCE THROUGH SYSTEM REDESIGN UNATTRIBUTED QUOTE UNATTRIBUTED QUOTE “IT’S BETTER TO INTEGRATE RESILIENCE AT THE BEGINNING WHEN WE BEGIN TO INVEST.” “RESILIENCE SHOULD BE ONE OF THE KEY CRITERIA IN SYSTEM DESIGNS.” Standardized common equipment and components can be moved, replaced and repaired faster when disruption occurs. This extends beyond individual assets. Supply chains should be designed around critical dependencies and downstream vulnerabilities. Digital and physical infrastructure also need to be developed together. Participants cautioned that simply adding AI to existing systems will not unlock its full potential. Future systems should instead be designed with AI capabilities in mind from the outset.
